Soccer: Permian / OHS roundup
Comments 0 | Recommend 0>> BOYS SOCCER -- Permian boys beat Cooper in shootout: In Midland, the Permian boys soccer team closed out the regular-season with a 2-1 shootout victory over Abilene Cooper on Saturday at Grande Communications Stadium.
Permian (12-8-1 overall, 8-4 district) won 3-2 in the extra session. The Panthers are assured of no worse than a tie for second place in the District 3-5A standings, but there will be a three-way tie for the district title if Odessa High (13-7-2, 7-4) beats San Angelo Central (14-7, 8-3) on Tuesday.
Alan Castillejos scored on a penalty kick in the 45th minute, and it looked like Permian would hold onto the shutout from there.
Permian keeper Chris Benavides made several stops in the second half, but Cooper (7-13-1, 4-7) pushed in the equalizer with less than five minutes remaining.
Castillejos, Junior Hel-guera and Cooper Barham all scored in the tiebreaker to give Permian the win.
"We're very happy with the win," Permian coach Luis Carmona said. "We had the opportunities to put a few more away, but Cooper's keeper is unbelievable. We had two of the best keepers in the district here, so we had to do it in a shootout instead."
The loss knocked Cooper out of playoff contention, giving postseason berths to Odessa High and Midland Lee in the process.
>> BOYS SOCCER -- OHS boys seal berth: In Abilene, the Odessa High boys soccer team qualified for the playoffs and kept alive hopes of winning the District 3-5A title after rallying for a 2-1 victory against Abilene High on Saturday at Shotwell Stadium.
OHS (13-7-2 overall, 7-4 overall) fell behind 1-0 at halftime on a penalty kick but rallied in the second half as Anthony Roque headed in a corner kick from Carlos Sifuentes and Uli Guillen scored on a breakaway.
OHS qualified for the postseason for a district record sixth consecutive season. The Bronchos can earn a share of the 3-5A title if they can beat San Angelo Central (14-7, 8-3) when the teams play at noon Tuesday at Ratliff Stadium in the regular-season finale for both teams.
If OHS wins, then the Bronchos would share the District 3-5A championship with Permian and Central.
>> GIRLS SOCCER -- Permian girls alive: In Midland, The Permian girls soccer team maintained hope for a fifth consecutive playoff berth with 2-0 win over Abilene Cooper on Saturday at Grande Communications Stadium.
Along with San Angelo Central's 1-0 victory against Midland Lee, Permian (10-12-1 overall, 5-7 district) now sits alone in fourth place in the district after winning their season finale.
Paige Strahan scored in the game's opening moments off an assist from Marianne Hubnik. Hubnik later assisted a goal by Shalee Thomas.
Permian now must wait until Tuesday when Midland Lee (10-11-1, 4-7) plays at Abilene Cooper (3-18, 0-11) to close the regular season.
If Lee wins, then there will be a playoff for the fourth-place playoff berth between Lee and Permian by District 3-5A rules, even though Permian swept the season series.
