Basketball: OHS, Permian have 3-5A first-teamers

Odessa High senior Travis Howard and Permian seniors Dionte Alford and Eric Clark were among the 13 players named to the All-District 3-5A boys basketball team, which was released on Monday.

Odessa High juniors Jeremy Flores and Javorian Guyton also made the first team.

Midland Lee, which went 12-0 in district play, had the most valuable player in Malcolm Miller, a 6-foot-6 sophomore; the defensive MVP in Dave Morris, a 6-2 junior; and the coach of the year in Mark Coffman.

Midland High’s Kirkland Jackson, a 6-5 junior, was named the offensive MVP, and Abilene Cooper’s Tommy Bowman, a 6-3 sophomore, was named the newcomer of the year.

Permian’s Spencer Drake and Odessa High’s Justin Muncy and Tomas Franco were among the recipients of the Skylar Wilburn award. Each of the other five schools in the district also had one recipient.

The girls season started last week and the boys season gets going this week, all while cross country, volleyball and football are in the midst of their playoffs. Should the UIL alter the basketball season to avoid such conflicts?
