Team tennis: Bronchos, Panthers hammer foes
Comments 0 | Recommend 0As Permian and Odessa High manhandled the same pair of opponents in team tennis dual matches Saturday, the experiences were worthwhile for a similar reason.
The coaches for each team said simply getting court time will pay off in a few weeks when District 3-5A action begins, even if the competition level will be at a different level.
Permian beat Andrews 17-2 before knocking off Wolfforth Frenship 18-1 on its home courts, while OHS beat Fren-ship 14-5 and Andrews 15-4 at its Bob Clark Tennis Center.
“I am happy to see us have some doubles teams jell to-gether,” OHS coach Jayson Everett said. “We did put in a lot of hours over the summer, so I’m not surprised at all (about the success), but the doubles teams didn’t get to play together in the summer. We have a lot of new teams this year, and the fact it’s coming together is exciting.”
Both teams also swept dual matches Friday against Lub-bock Monterey and Levelland, which keeps Permian undefeated on the season.
Permian is off until Sept. 7-8, when it will play in the Abilene Team Tournament, and head coach Mary Kay Mann said the team plans on building from its success in the opening two weekends.
“The match-play experience for our freshman kind of gave everybody a sense of what district’s going to be like,” Mann said. “Now they know what it’s like when you’re the last match on and everybody’s watching. It was good to see some of our doubles teams play together, kind of like the cement drying on your lineup.”
Permian went 13-1 in doubles matches Saturday, dropping only a mixed doubles match against Andrews. The Panthers dropped just one boys singles match against Andrews, while they lost just one girls singles match against Frenship.
Odessa High’s boys swept all nine matches against Frenship and won eight of nine mtaches against Andrews, including a sweep in boys singles.
OHS also will head to Abilene in two weeks but first will play host to Midland Christian at 4 p.m. Thursday.
“One of the things we worked on was just closing out the second sets in our matches,” Everett said. “(Friday) we had entirely too many (split-set matches), and our percentage was much higher closing it out in the second set (Saturday). That was good.”
