Football: Andrews candidates come from near and far

From Andrews to New York to South Carolina to Oregon, the applicants for the Andrews ISD athletic director and head football coach are scattered across the country.

Ten states, including Texas, are represented. There are college coaches and applicants from every Texas classification except for six-man.

The final list won’t be determined until 4:30 p.m. today, but no matter who applies today Andrews is in a good position based on the 85 who had applied through Tuesday.

“It has been a pleasant surprise,” Andrews ISD superintendent David Mitchell said. “The level of experience and success we are seeing, it creates one of those good problems.

“There are several out there that can do the job. We want to find one that not only fits the qualifications, but also fits the community.”

Hometown favorites Jay McWilliams, McCamey’s head coach, and Ted Willman, Permian assistant head coach, are on the applicants list.

Sweetwater head coach Kent Jackson has applied, as has Littlefield head coach Bryan Huseman and Wolfforth Frenship assistant Randy Doege.

In the larger school ranks, Class 4A power LaMarque’s head coach Chris Jones and offensive coordinator Will Compton have thrown their hats in.

Class 5A head coaches in Aldine’s Bob Jones and R.L. Turner’s Larry McBroom also have applied.

“We will meet as early as next week or the following week to pare down and try to get a list of potential interviews,” Mitchell said. “I don’t know how many we will have, but we could have a dozen or more.”

The opening was created after Blaine Springston turned in his resignation effective at the end of the 2007-08 football season.

Springston was head coach at Andrews from 2002-2007, compiling a 38-31 record and leading the Mustangs to the Class 3A Division I quarterfinals in 2007 before losing to Abilene Wylie 28-14.

“We would love to have it done by February,” Mitchell said. “In a perfect world it will be done by realignment, but I have my doubts about that, though that is our goal.”

According to Andrews ISD, Springston’s salary was $86,225 for the 2007-08 school year and included the use of a Chevrolet Suburban.

The school district also recently completed work on a $15 million athletic facility that includes two swimming pools, a 2,000-seat gymnasium, a 1,000-seat theater, five dressing rooms for football, one for basketball, a training room and a girls facility.

All that together has made this one of the most coveted jobs in West Texas as shown by the number of applicants.

Coaches in New York, Minnesota, South Carolina, Oregon, Colorado, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Florida and Indiana all applied as well.

Of those candidates, Delta High School (Ind.) head coach Grant Zgunda has compiled a career record of 135-34, including 98-22 Delta, which plays in Class 4A — the second-largest in Indiana.
